The City
Rome is the capital of Italy and a special comune (named Comune di Roma Capitale). Rome, also the capital of the Lazio region.There are 2,873,874 residents in 1,285 km2 (496.1 sq mi) and it is also the country's most populated comune. Rome is the fourth-most populous city in the European Union. Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, within Lazio (Latium), along the shores of the Tiber. The Vatican City is an independent country inside the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city.For this reason Rome has been often defined as capital of two states. The language spoken here is Latin. Rome is a major international center for higher education containing numerous academies, colleges and universities. Rome ranked as 62nd in the world and top in Italy in its World University Ranking.
Rome has the status of a global city. In 2016, Rome ranked as the 14th-most-visited city in the world, 3rd most visited in the European Union, and the most popular tourist attraction in Italy. It has a growing stock of contemporary and modern art and architecture.
Rome is an important centre for music, and it has an intense musical scene, including several prestigious music conservatories and theatres.
Rome is at the centre of the radial network of roads that roughly follow the lines of the ancient Roman roads which began at the Capitoline Hill and connected Rome with its empire. Rome is served by three airports.
